A report has revealed what Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga is thinking about leaving Old Trafford, amid Borussia Dortmund pushing to sign him this month.

Elanga is struggling to make as much of an impact for Erik ten Hag as he did under predecessor Ralf Rangnick. The winger, who prefers to operate on the left flank, has fallen down the pecking order. While he has made 18 appearances in all competitions, few of these include starts or last a full 90 minutes.

Elanga is struggling to get into Ten Hag’s starting lineup due to the brilliant form of Marcus Rashford, who is already on 16 goals for the season, as well as the emergence of 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho.

Due to his somewhat frustrating Man Utd situation, Elanga was tipped to join Everton earlier in the January transfer window.

But Frank Lampard appears to be targeting other players. And there is now the potential for Elanga to achieve a more enticing transfer by joining a Champions League club.

On January 17, talkSPORT put Elanga in line for a switch to Borussia Dortmund. The German side will come up against Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16, while they possess top players in their squad such as Jude Bellingham and Marco Reus.

At the time, it was claimed Elanga’s potential switch to the Bundesliga dependent on Jadon Sancho. The Englishman has been training away from Man Utd to work on his fitness, with Ten Hag also suggesting he had to overcome some mental issues.

Sancho is now back in the fold. And this means Elanga should be allowed to join Dortmund.

Man Utd player wants Bundesliga move

Sport Witness have now provided an update on Dortmund’s chase for the 20-year-old, while citing reports coming out of Germany. They have revealed Elanga’s thoughts on departing Man Utd, as he would apparently ‘very much like’ to sign for Dortmund.

Elanga cares about Man Utd, having spent time in their youth setup. However, he knows he needs to leave to get game time. And with Dortmund’s history of developing young players, he knows they are a perfect next destination for him.

Story continues

Dortmund, meanwhile, have stepped up their pursuit of Elanga. They have apparently begun talks with Man Utd to find out how an agreement can be reached.

There has been talk of either a loan move or permanent move for Elanga this month. So it will be interesting to see what kind of deal takes him to Dortmund.

If Ten Hag believes Elanga has a future at Old Trafford, then the player will probably join Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season. This will allow him to pick up game time and get his confidence back up.

But if Ten Hag prefers his other winger options, such as Rashford and Garnacho, then Elanga will probably be sold to Dortmund.

It is always sad to see young players being sold, as it is hard to predict how they will do in the future. Just look at Chelsea, who let Kevin de Bruyne and Mo Salah go before they became world-class stars.

However, Elanga simply is not at the right level for Man Utd currently. And keeping him warming the bench for the rest of the season does no good for anyone.

meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on a new Man Utd deal which should keep Real Madrid at bay.
