FUNDRAISING continues in support of Trafford General Hospital after it was struck by lightning last week.

A fire ravaged the roof of the hospital following the lightning strike last Wednesday and firefighters worked all afternoon and into the evening fighting it.

Trafford General Hospital Charity, part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Charity, said much of the roof was “very badly damaged”.

In response to community support, she set up a page on JustGiving the next day, even though the cost of repairing the damage is already covered.

Charity Director Millie Stacey said, “We know Trafford General Hospital is the heart of the Trafford community, so we were touched, but not at all surprised, when some amazing people asked how we operated the hospital at the time could support.

“The wonderful team at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is rising to the challenge and meeting the needs of patients and making sure repairs are underway.

“However, we wanted to give a chance to people who asked how they could support the hospital. We created the We Love Trafford Hospital page to help people do this.

“All funds raised will go where the hospital needs most to fund projects that enrich and enhance the experience of patients and their families,” she added.

She also thanked the community for their support so far.

The page on JustGiving is around £ 530 at the time of writing.

On the night of the fire, a station manager from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) shared photos of the damage on social media and praised the firefighters for stopping the fire before it spread to other areas of the hospital.

He tweeted: “Absolutely phenomenal commitment from all GMFRS staff and partners present at Trafford General Hospital. A fantastic stop in the roof that prevents further damage. ”

Despite the fire brigade, more than 60 patients had to be evacuated, the department for minor injuries and the ambulance remained closed for the rest of the day.

However, by the end of last week, all services were up and running.
