Decision awaiting major renovation plans at Old Trafford cricket ground

Key proposals to redesign and increase the capacity of the Old Trafford cricket stadium will take another step forward later this week.

Trafford City Council planners have recommended that the Planning Committee approve the motion to demolish the site’s Red Rose Suite and seating and replace them with a new hotel extension and grandstand, the Manchester Evening News reported.

The Talbot Road site will also feature a new museum, shop and ticket sales area, new seating and facilities for spectators, and a connecting structure to connect with the expanded hotel.

The city council gave preliminary approval for the project in January 2020, including a 109-bedroom hotel in Stretford and a new 4,935-seat grandstand at the Lancashire Cricket Club.

The new grandstand replaces the existing Red Rose grandstand on the grounds of the Emirates Old Trafford cricket club and the adjacent Hilton Garden Inn hotel is being expanded.

To expand the hotel, a six-story block will be built on the east side of Brian Statham Way, which will be connected to the existing hotel by a pedestrian bridge.

The new booth at Emirates Old Trafford will increase the venue’s capacity to a total of 26,700, making it the largest cricket pitch outside of London.

Brian Statham Way, which runs next to the site, will also be diverted into a winding road as part of the plans and a terrace bar will be added to the side of the hotel.

Brian Statham Way’s diversion to accommodate the new stand may need to be the subject of a future building application itself.

The site plans are part of Trafford City Council’s development program for the Town Hall area, which includes the Lancashire Cricket Club, the former Kellogg factory site, the new University Academy 92 campus and all the way to the A56 and White City Retail Park.

In January 2020, Trafford City Council almost unanimously approved the framework application for both the hotel extension and the new stadium grandstand last night, with only one city council voting against the plans.

This new application marks the next stage in the plan and would allow construction workers to get down to business in earnest by demolishing the Red Rose Suite.

The planning committee of Trafford City Council will discuss and decide on the plans on Thursday, June 10th, starting at 6:30 p.m.
