Our image this week shows Manchester United striker Denis Law looking distinctly unhappy about being sent off against Arsenal at Old Trafford in October 1967.

Scottish international law, right, wasn’t the only player to get his marching orders in the hard-fought First Division encounter in front of a near capacity crowd of 60,197.

Arsenal centre-half and fellow Scot Ian Ure, left, was also ordered off the pitch by referee George McCabe.

Law had the last laugh as the Red Devils won the match 1-0 with a goal from John Aston. The sending-off was forgotten as the season progressed and United battled for the league title.

In the end, Matt Busby’s side finished in second place with 58 points – two behind local rivals Manchester City. The race for the title went down to the final match of the season when United lost 2-1 to Sunderland.

But any disappointment was swept away when the Red Devils became the first English club to win the European Cup by beating Portuguese champions Benfica 4-1 at Wembley.

Our modern image from October 2018 shows Newcastle United centre-back Jamaal Lascelles raising his arm in a similar manner to Law in a Premier League match at Old Trafford.

He was frustrated at seeing his side squander a two-goal advantage in a game the Red Devils eventually won 3-2. United’s scorers were Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez.
