Manchester United fans warn of crackdown on illegal matchday parking at Old Trafford

Police crack down on drivers who illegally park their cars at Old Trafford on match days.

Trafford City Council and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have joined forces with Manchester United to target supporters parking their vehicles on curbs, footpaths, roundabouts and other unauthorized locations near the stadium.

Authorities said offenders pose a danger to pedestrians, other road users and themselves, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to handle nearby accidents and emergencies.

During the Christmas period, the Council and GMP issued 779 fines for illegally parked vehicles. Those caught face a fine of up to £70.

Coun Steve Adshead, Executive Member for Environmental and Regulatory Services, said: “We do not tolerate indiscriminate parking in our borough and we certainly will not allow it to happen near Old Trafford on game days.

“The vast majority of fans driving sensibly and legally to the wildlife park. But we will crack down on those who park with no regard for the safety of others. They will be faced with fines and we will work with the police to strengthen our enforcement of parking and freeway regulations.”

GMP Trafford Neighborhood Chief Inspector Steven Prescott said: “We are working closely with Trafford City Council to ensure those attending the Games are following the rules in place to keep people safe.

“While the majority of fans attend matches and are kind and respectful of others, there are some who disregard the safety of others and park their cars in illegal areas around Old Trafford Stadium.

“This is unacceptable and irresponsible. We want to ensure that all fans can fully enjoy the games and have an enjoyable experience.

“We will not accept those who park illegally on our streets and we will take appropriate enforcement action if they park in an unsafe and illegal area.”

Count Adshead urged fans to travel to games by public transport or park responsibly in an authorized car park. There are two Metrolink stations just five minutes’ walk from the ground, including Wharfside on the new Trafford Park line.
