Manchester United are ready to join RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo this summer, but only if their preferred Barcelona move fails.

The Spanish international has taken a unique path in his career so far and left the youth system from Barcelona to Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 16 before moving to Leipzig in January 2020.

Barcelona are dying to bring him back to Catalonia, he wants to return and Leipzig is open to summer sale after convincing him to stay another season earlier this year.

It seemed like the deal was settled almost enough, but Spanish publication El Nacional reports that Barcelona’s interest in Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is concrete and could thwart the bill.

New Barca coach Xavi is keen to add an attacking option to his squad in January and that could be a loan move for Sterling in January or a permanent move in the summer as he fell into the pecking order at City.

Olmo has made it clear that moving to Barcelona is his preferred option but if they choose Sterling instead, or even perceive he is no longer wanted at Camp Nou, he could take Manchester United’s option.

The Red Devils are aware that the 23-year-old wants to join Barca but will be ready to step in if they fail.

Olmo has struggled with injuries so far this season and only played four Bundesliga games, only two of which were from the start.

He’s made a Champions League start this season, ending up in a wild 3-3 loss to Manchester City in September, while also kicking off Spain’s win against Sweden this week.
