Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United made “their best performance against Man City” during his tenure as manager in Saturday’s drab goalless draw at Old Trafford.

The Manchester derby this weekend couldn’t live up to the hype. Both teams had only two shots on goal.

Manchester City had the best chance through Riyad Mahrez but David de Gea saved the Algerian’s shot in the first half while Marcus Rashford believed he gave United a penalty just to show VAR that he was offside.

After the standoff, Solskjaer said: “During my time against Manchester City it was the best performance we’ve ever had. Not the best result, but the best performance.

‘It was a close game. I know we beat them a couple of times last season, but they were different games. You had a couple of great moments.

‘They are two good teams. Tactically we knew they would cause us some problems, but defensively we were excellent.

‘I’m thrilled with the defensive form. We didn’t do as much with the ball as we wanted. You probably had the bigger moments in open play. Everyone should be happy with a tie.

“If Jose Mourinho were the manager of either of these two teams, we would kill them now. That was really bad, we shouldn’t accept that. “Ð ?????? @ GNev2 was disappointed with both clubs’ lack of ambition during a cage-like Manchester derby at Old Trafford. ð ???? ¬ pic.twitter.com/UlTtTS3fE6

“It’s a mental challenge when this happens to you.” [going out of Champions League]. The mental energy you spend recovering from Tuesday is enormous. ‘

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola added: “They started well after we finished well in the first half.

‘We created three or four clear chances, you can’t expect many against a team like United and a good point in the end. It will be a good point in the future.

‘United are always a strong team, this is Old Trafford and in some details they are not in the Champions League. They hit when they can walk, but we controlled them really well.

‘It’s not a derby, it would be different with the people and maybe they put more pressure on. Without people it’s different every week, the virus is still there, you have to be careful. ‘

After the goalless draw, Manchester United and Manchester City are seventh and eighth in the Premier League table.
