PSG to the European quarter-finals without a second leg
Paris Saint-Germain will face French rivals and defending champions Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League, although the round of 16 against Sparta Prague has not yet ended.
Covid-19 cases in Paris Saint-Germain mean their players are in quarantine and unable to travel to play the away game of their tie, which they scored 5 in total after an all-out first-leg win in Paris on March 9th in Paris: 0 had led.
The Czech club announced on Tuesday that both clubs and Uefa had agreed not to play the second leg and give Sparta Prague a 3-0 second leg win.
But that means Paris Saint-Germain can get away 5-3 overall.
Sparta Prague said: “According to the agreement between the clubs and UEFA, the home game will be rated 3-0 in favor of Sparta. In the sum of both duels, however, this means that our opponents will reach the quarter-finals. “
Budapest will receive both games in the game between Chelsea and Wolfsburg
The pandemic has also affected the venues of two quarter-finals in which both English clubs participated.
Chelsea’s home and away games against last year’s runner-up Wolfsburg will be played in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, due to travel restrictions between Germany and Great Britain.
Chelsea will be home first on Wednesday March 24th before returning to Hungary a week later. The away goals rule still applies.
Meanwhile, the first leg of the box office battle between Manchester City and Spanish giants Barcelona will be played in Monza, Italy, rather than Catalonia, as UK travelers have Spanish restrictions.
The second leg of this game will be played at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium, as originally expected.
England kindly adds France to the April schedule
England will play their first game on foreign soil in more than a year in April, while they face France in a friendly in Caen, Normandy.
The FA announced the game on Tuesday, in addition to an already-announced home game against Canada, as England prepares to host the Euros in 2022.
After beating Northern Ireland 6-0 in February, the two games will be the second and third games for interim coach Hege Riise, who are each responsible for the lionesses. Both games will be broadcast live on BBC Four as follows:
France v England (April 9, 8:10 p.m. CET, live on BBC Four)
England v Canada (April 13, 7:15 PM BST, live on BBC Four)
The Everton game continues despite the fire on Friday
Following a fire at the Everton Women’s home stadium at Walton Hall Park on Friday evening, manager Willie Kirk has confirmed the damage is not as bad as initially feared and the WSL home game against Chelsea will continue on Wednesday.
The fire, referred to police by the Merseyside Fire Department, occurred on the opposite side of the pitch from the main stand, but Kirk said the club had already replaced the burned television frame.
“The pitch is not affected, the dressing room is not affected, the player area is not affected,” said Kirk. “The temporary scaffolding that the TV portal consists of had to be dismantled yesterday and a new one built.
“It’s disappointing. There is a cost to this of course, there is an element of time involved in it but the club went out of their way to get this done very quickly and make sure it was safe and looking the best it could. There’s a mid-term aesthetic that isn’t particularly good to look at, but we’ve cleaned that up as best we can and as I said, the game won’t have any impact tomorrow. “
